Maggie’s Centre in Swansea

2018 - 2020

Elements of Action was commissioned to design and build a herringbone slate and turf bank as a multi-functional sculptural boundary installation in the gardens of the Maggie’s Centre in Swansea which is located beside the Singleton Hospital site.

The Cancer Care Centres were founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks and offer a new type of cancer care, the Swansea Centre is designed by the late Japanese Architect Kisho Kurokawa and the garden was designed by Kim Wilkie and completed by Garbers and James in December 2011. A place specific response to enclose, shield and enhance the sanctuary and design of the centre from the adjacent noisy roads.

The slate was sourced from a local quarry and the herringbone pattern and sporadic Walsh native planting created a natural and softened architectural element.
