New Ross Greenway Sculptures

In collaboration with Aoife Banville (2023)

Reimagining the steel railway tracks in New Ross, a series of 2 sculptures was created by Elements of Action and Aoife Banville along the Greenway. The concept of these pieces was informed as a reminder of the routes and journeys taken by the thousands of people who traveled and worked on the railway in the past. Investigation and the reusing of the historic railway tracks in the new contemporary setting of the greenway was a key vision of the project. The physical materiality of the pieces work both spatially along the new greenway but reflect and remember the cultural importance of the railways to the town. Modeling sizes, shapes, weights & design of foundations was key in the delivery of the two sculptures - one with 5 uprights and the second with 3 steel uprights.

This piece was commissioned by Wexford County Council Culture Team in partnership with South East Greenway under the ‘Back to our Routes and Roots’ project, funded under the Creative Ireland project and delivered by Esther Gerrard & Ed Coveney of Elements for Action in collaboration with Local Artist Aoife Banville.

Maggie’s Centre in Swansea

(2018-2020)

Elements of Action was commissioned to design and build a herringbone slate and turf bank as a multi-functional sculptural boundary installation in the gardens of the Maggie’s Centre in Swansea which is located beside the Singleton Hospital site.

The Cancer Care Centres were founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks and offer a new type of cancer care, the Swansea Centre is designed by the late Japanese Architect Kisho Kurokawa and the garden was designed by Kim Wilkie and completed by Garbers and James in December 2011. A place specific response to enclose, shield and enhance the sanctuary and design of the centre from the adjacent noisy roads.

The slate was sourced from a local quarry and the herringbone pattern and sporadic Walsh native planting created a natural and softened architectural element.

Orchard Peace Park

(2023-2024)

Funded by Creative Ireland, in collaboration Wexford County Council, the Irish Architectural Foundation, and Joanne Coughlan (Studio AULA)

Using the input of local community members of all ages via surveys and 5 in-person workshops, the team listened to the communities thoughts and experiences to co-design a new vision for Orchard Peace Park in Enniscorthy that complements and builds on the existing design, so as to increase the use of the park and reduce anti-social behaviour.

The final proposal of short-term and long-term enhancements focuses on the core visions of maintaining and growing biodiversity, creating places for people to gather, implementing more pause and play points along paths, improving safety, and increasing culture features.
